How many slides should I use in my business presentation?
This is a common question for business presenters using PowerPoint. Many people are looking for a number. Some self-proclaimed presentation experts will boldly state “one slide for every 3 minutes” or “maximum of 20 slides no matter how long you speak”.
Some corporate executives have been so frustrated with boring PowerPoint presentations that they’ve issued edicts to limit the number of slides in any company presentation. Unfortunately, the result is too busy and often unreadable slides.
The real answer isn’t so clear. Use as few slides as possible and as many as necessary.
On one hand it is possible to deliver an effective presentation with no slides. At the other end 50 or more slides might be appropriate.
Some slides might need to be on screen for a few minutes while others might only need to appear for a few seconds. Most of the time, the slide is not the message. It is simply there to reinforce your message.
Of course the most important thing to keep in mind is that your slides are visuals for the audience and not simply your notes.
The easiest way to tell the difference is to see if there are words on the slides. If the slide has only text, then it’s for you. If the slide is an image then it’s for your audience.
So how many slides should you have in your PowerPoint presentation?
