Are some people natural born speakers?
When people ask this question, I believe what they are really suggesting is that they aren’t natural-born speakers and therefore there is no hope for them.
People use the “natural born speaker” theory as an excuse to deliver bad presentations or not speak at all.
They are saying, “It’s not my fault, I’m just not a natural-born public speaker.”
The reality? I’ve met many speakers from very bad to very good. Many of the good and great speakers confessed that they were not natural-born speakers. They admitted to experiencing embarrassing moments while they developed their public speaking abilities.
I wasn’t a natural. I was a shy kid. Despite that, I learned how to speak in public. I’m a professional speaker who has delivered over 2,000 presentations.
I believe that most if not all great speakers were not natural. Winston Churchill is often quoted and praised for his public speaking skills, yet he wasn’t a natural. He learned how to speak.
I believe that there are many people who believe they are natural-born speakers. And they are often terrible or at best mediocre speakers because they don’t improve on their natural ability. They don’t develop the skills and techniques of master speakers.
If you ask, “Are some people natural-born speakers?” you ask the wrong question. The important question is “How does one become a better speaker?”
